Accelerating plant cell culture from development to industrial scale

COCO-AI is a Horizon Europe project developing an AI-supported plant cell culture platform for high-value natural ingredients, using cocoa as its industrial demonstrator.

The Challenge

Plant cell culture already works. The challenge is making the development pathway faster and more systematic.

Industry relies on plants for valuable compounds used across food, health and other sectors, while some of these supply chains remain geographically concentrated and exposed to agricultural variability.

Plant cells can already produce valuable compounds under controlled conditions. But moving from a plant source to a robust industrial process requires multiple development stages, from establishing suitable cell lines through cultivation and process optimisation to scale-up. Much of that work remains iterative and species-specific.

COCO-AI is targeting that development cycle.

The Approach

One platform connecting the steps that determine successful scale-up.

01

DEVELOP

Standardise how plant cell lines and cultivation processes are developed and characterised.

02

LEARN

Use experimental data and AI-supported decision tools to guide the next development steps.

03

SCALE

Translate selected processes towards industrial production and validate the approach at scale.

FROM PLATFORM TO PRODUCTION

Cocoa will test whether the approach works at industrial scale.

COCO-AI will use Theobroma cacao as its principal demonstrator, scaling-up towards a 10,000-litre industrial demonstration.
